For me, there's nothing more satisfying than a really good mystery – and acclaimed master of the genre Michael Connolly delivers three of them in "The Lincoln Lawyer Novels", which bundles "The Lincoln Lawyer", "The Brass Verdict", and "The Reversal" into one fat volume of legal whodunits. There's an eBay reference in it, too, so imagine my delight! The Lincoln Lawyer is Michael "Mickey" Haller, so called because he operates out of the back of one of the four Lincoln Town Cars he bought at a bargain fleet rate after a big case put him in the money. Mickey's a defense attorney, which doesn't endear him to his ex-wife, who's a prosecutor in the District Attorney's office, nor to Heironymous "Harry" Bosch, the iconoclastic LA cop who is the mainstay of Connolly's other excellent series and makes appearances in the Lincoln Lawyer books as well. What makes Connolly's books so outstanding is that they are insightful character studies as well as suspenseful whodunits. Mickey is a likeable guy with very human flaws, most of which he's all too well aware of. It's fascinating to read the first three series installments in a row, because in addition to each one standing alone as a well-plotted and superbly delivered story, there is an overall arc of character wherein Mickey grows and evolves as a result of his experiences. Each of the three cases detailed in the various books leads him inexorably to a tipping point to which only his own moral compass could direct him. I can't wait to find out where he goes from where Connolly left off! If a good read to you means something with both substance and style, "The Lincoln Lawyer Novels" (and indeed all of Connolly's books) transcend the mystery/suspense/legal thriller genres to become something more than all of the above. Each and every title is a smart, sufficiently complex, and above all riveting adventure that will keep you turning pages late into the night. Thank you for reading my review.
