"Parachute Infantry: An American Paratroopr's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich was written by David Kenyon Webster, a member of the famed Easy Company, 506th PIR of the 101st Airborne Division. This memoir was written shortly after World War II, but was not published until long after Webster's death. Webster tells of the training and preparation for the D-Day assault against the German forces in Europe. He follows the actions of the 506th through D-Day, Holland (where he was shot), and into Germany itself. Webster was a literate man. He had started college at Harvard as an English literature major before he left for war. As such, he brings a fresh perspective to his descriptions of what the life of soldier entailed. Don't look for detailed accounts of what unit did what and what the high command was thinking. This book takes you on to the front line with the troops in the field. This book is one of many that have now been written about or by members of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. It is the most individual in writing style. Included is a nice forward by historian, Stephen Ambrose. Published by Louisiana State University Press, 1994. 262 pages, no index. 9 pages of photos/drawings. Original price: $29.95Read full review
