The emphasis is on developing different approaches to practical activities with children, noticing what happens and building the necessary teaching skills around what works for you. Part 2 develops more complex teaching strategies including how to optimise interactive teaching. There is a balance between clearly supported activities for beginner teachers such as working with grids, number lines, target boards, cloths and teaching the rules of arithmetic and developing challenging ideas for more experienced colleagues such as visualisation, Silent Way, divisibility rules, problem solving strategies and bridging. Ideas are linked throughout the book and suggestions are provided for useful resources, further reading and websites.
