I purchased this book because I had read "Vice" by Lou Dubose, and I wanted another perspective on VP Cheney. I found "The Rise And Rise of Richard B. Cheney" to be fairly interesting, providing some stories and information that added to what I had learned in "Vice." I was disappointed, however, to find that its author displayed too much "attitude" against Cheney, which lessened his credibility compared to Dubose in "Vice." Both books portrayed Cheney in an unfavorable light, yet "Vice" seemed more objective and less editorial, allowing the readers to formulate their opinions of Cheney. Nichols in "The Rise and Rise..." offered some rather cynical examples of Cheney's supposed "values"--suggesting, for example, that he allowed his wife to become pregnant for the first time only so that he could qualify for a New Father's Draft Exemption during the Vietnam War. His decision to include those kinds of editorial comments diminished his effectiveness in portraying Cheney as calculating & devious. I would recommend "Vice" instead to readers who only want to read one of those books.Read full review
