Excerpt from The Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy, Vol. 1: Irish Manuscript Series D is a vellum manuscript, also in the Bodleian, marked Rawl. B. 512. It is a double-columned quarto, containing ff. 154, and written in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The prose preface begins at so. 53 a 1. The poem commences at fo. 53 b, but breaks off at line 60 of the prologue. At so. 54 a begins the epilogue and it ends at fo. 56 b.This is followed by some misspelt verses commencing thus: - bendacht indrig donelaib rogenair omvirefor anmum ganmire oengusa conglaine;The hlessing of the King of Clouds, who was horn of Mary, on the ul without madness of Oengus with purity; and the seven succeeding folios, from 57 a to 64 a, are filled with tes on the body of our poem, which unfortunately is t w in this manuscript. The scribe's name appears to have been Dubthach O'Duibgenan. The text of these fragments is respectable, but the corrupt Middle-Irish spelling prevails. Thus, ea for Old-Irish c is found in seacht, Prol. 2, ro-sealgatar, Prol. 29, teacht, Prol. 31: final a is written for u in surna, Prol. 44; and d is written fort in comed, Prol. 6, fodaimdis, Prol. 51, ada-n, Ep. 34. These four MSS. all offer the same text, and their disagreements in orthography (often very considerable) are due to the igrance and carelessness of the copyists. By intercomparison and by attending to the rhymes the original text can generally be restored. Besides these four there is a vellum copy of our poem, written by one Ruaidhri O'Luinin, formerly in the College of St. Isidore, in Rome, and w in the Franciscan Monastery, Merchants'-quay, Dublin. Of the part of this (with the tes and glosses thereon) dealing with the month of December, I possess a transcript made by the late Dr. Todd. There is also said to be a paper copy, made by Michael O'Clery, in the seventeenth century, and preserved in the Burgundian Library, at Brussels; and there is an imperfect copy, in a small folio vellum MS., belonging to the Royal Irish Academy, w marked i and written by Uilliam mac an Legha in the year 1467.
