This was a fave movie when I was a kid back in the 1960's. It was very entertaining, educational, and inspired me to want to learn to fly! However, my eyesight prevented my becoming a US Military Pilot as I had intended. But, some 50 years later, I still enjoy this movie that I used to have on VHS tape. No longer possessing a working VCR, I set out recently to replace some of my fave movies from my late VHS library with DVDs. This is one of those favorites. Though intended as a Romantic Comedy, the film is actually an historic documentary, in that most of the aircraft in the film were flying replicas of planes that were flown in an actual 1911 race around Britain, or restored museum displays used for the actual flying scenes and still shots! As a period costume RomCom, this film is totally enjoyable for the whole family!Read full review

I'm really glad that this is finally available on DVD. It was great in the '60's and still great fun today. The age old challenge of good guys and villans is perfectly set in the venue of a historically true flying machine race. The acting is about a tongue in cheek as possible, and the aircraft are not perfectly accurate, but certainly close enough (the French entry is powered by a VW engine, for example). Other technical details, like Lord Rawnsley's Rolls-Royce, however are Perfect! It is a good companion movie with "The Great Race" (1965) with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn etc. Best pie fight ever filmed!
We have the movie on VHS and wanted to preserve it for viewing into the future. We watch it every year. The DVD offers a clearer picture and the audio is better also. It is getting much more difficult to purchase DVD's locally. Buying on-line offers so much more selection at reasonable prices. The show itself is a fun show on many levels and not excessively intense, as many more modern offerings are. I find it particularly entertaining because of the technological aspect of how flying aircraft began and evolved. It is absolutely amazing how much air travel has changed within 100 years.

THis is an excellent comedy based on the very early days of flying. It's about a race across the English Channel from Dover to Paris. One MAJOR warning. At intermission, there are pictures with the music at first, then the screen goes black. The intermission is NOT over, although it looks that way. Let it go on and the movie will continue after about 5 minutes of just music and a black screen.

This was comedy from the early 70's. Light, fun and full of talent. I love it. As soon as possible I will find and purchase the sister film "Those Daring young men and third jaunty jalopies". Both films are stuffed with comedic talent that sadly are no longer with us.
