Tom Nolan's book is filled with facts, and for those who wish additional history of the swing era and Shaw's bands, it is a valuable addition. When the author starts to delve into Shaw's personality, his wives, and eccentricities, the author begins to stumble, not quite sure how to express his conclusions. Truth be told, Shaw's egocentric life after he put down the clarinet is boring, and since that covers most of his life, the book slides steadily downhill after the forties. The strength of Nolan's biography is Shaw as a musician. The too long years after tarnish Artie Shaw as an artist.
