The second official solo album from former Fairport Convention guitarist Ian Matthews, TIGERS WILL SURVIVE has a similar back-porch groove to that of its predecessor, IF YOU SAW THRO' MY EYES, yet it's a little more ambitious, too, a fact made clear by its fairly diverse sonic pallette. Matthews tackles an a capella cover of the Ronettes' "Da Doo Ron Ron," offers the meditative "Hope You Know" and the slightly funky "Right Before My Eyes," and brings it back to the country with "Please Be My Friend" and "Close the Door Lightly." The stand-out track, however, is Matthews's urgent cover of "House of Unamerican Blues Activity Dream," by his inspiration, Richard Farina. The excellent California-based Water Records reissued the album in 2007.
