This biography of the great Swedish tenor Jussi Bjoring- considered by many to be among the three greatest tenors of all time- is a must have for any Bjorling / opera fan. It is THE definitive biography of this incredible singer, told with great sensitivity and unparalleled scholarship by Andrew Farkas and Jussi Bjorling's widow, Anna-Lisa Bjorling Barkman. Using impeccably documented and fascinating interviews with those who knew and sang with Jussi Bjorling, Mrs. Bjorling and Mr. Farkas have created a biography rich in detail and a delight to read. Don't let this one get away. Some background on Jussi Bjorling: "The eminent tenor Jussi Björling was born in 1911 in Borlänge, Sweden. He studied singing with his father, an accomplished vocalist, and made his debut public appearance at the age of five with the Björling Male Quartet. The group performed in concerts throughout Sweden and the United States for ten years, and Jussi received vocal training from John Forsell at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. He made is operatic debut in 1930 at the Royal Theater of Stockholm as the Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut, and began to sing in the major opera venues in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, and the Dresden State Opera. Mr. Björling made his American debut in a Carnegie Hall concert in 1937; the next year, he appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera as Rodolfo in La Boheme. He sang a wide variety of roles at the Met, but was interrupted for a time by the onset of World War II. After the war, he resumed his star appearances at the Met and abroad, winning the highest praise for his silvery tone and stunning range. From 1945 to 1960, he sang nearly every tenor role, specializing in French and Italian repertoire. He was a favorite of critics and lay audiences alike, and made a large number of operatic and recital recordings. On March 15, 1960, Mr. Björling suffered a heart attack before a performance at London's Covent Garden; although he performed that night, the exertion no doubt took its toll. He died six months later in Sweden."
