Listening to Eugene Record's solo albums takes on a different flavor if you're familiar with his earlier work with the Chi-Lites and his productions for artists like the Artistics, Barbara Acklin, Otis Leavil, and others. To say expectations were high is an understatement. People were expecting Record, the prolific songwriter/producer/singer, to blow up big time. Instead, his solo work has virtually no edge. He's content. Warner Bros. must have fattened his bank account with a big advance because he doesn't sound hungry or hell-bent to come out of the studio with a smash. This is a pleasant album but hardly riveting or essential. One of the best cuts, "Fan the Fire," sounds better by the Impressions, whose version came out around this same period and was produced by Record. ~ Andrew Hamilton
