In the late 1400s, European nations were battling for imperial and ecomic power. Christopher Columbus was convinced that sailing west from Europe could provide easier access to the Indies and its lucrative spice trade. Enticed by this prospect, the king and queen of Spain agreed to back Columbus's voyage. In 1492 he sailed three ships west, landing in the Bahamas and mistaking them for islands off the coast of the Indies. He would continue to deny where he had landed. But his four total voyages exploring the Caribbean, Central America, and South America kicked off the pivotal European exploration and colonization of the New World.
