Wonderful Loetz "Octopus" Vase c. 1885-88

This sophisticated Loetz vase is a squat ginger jar with a tri-cornered fluted lip, entirely decorated in the famous "octopus" pattern. The main body of the vase is comprised of irregular areas in shades of warm browns ranging from deep chocolate to cafe au lait, with the darker tones near the neck and the base. The body pattern is broken up by wide, irregular whitish bands that seem to glow from within the milky vase interior . These variegated tentacle-like bands are enriched by a deep chocolate brown outline. The tentacles form a cloudy wave pattern swirling around the vase.

The sinuous "tentacles" are punctuated with one glass "eye" suggesting the octopus' face. The brown and cafe au lait areas of the body are further enhanced by a fine mesh like pattern of wavy gold lines. The tri-cornered lip is milky white on the inside and decorated with three small areas of gilded scrollwork.

The Loetz factory took first place for its innovative glass ware at the Paris Exhibition in 1889. After that win, Loetz remained one of the most famous makers of art glass in the Czech-German region until the beginning of WWII. The feather-like designs for which they became famous were achieved by wrapping a hot piece of glass with equally hot glass threads and then pulling those threads to make designs while the material was still mallable. The factory burned to the ground in 1940.

This is a fabulous piece of octopus and a great example of Loetz's artistry in glass. It would make a handsome addition to any modern decor or any glass collection.

Marked: Hand etched on the bottom puntil "9159" and the word "patent".

Measures: 5 1/2 " H x 3 "across at the bottom of the base

Excellent condition: Absolutely no chips, cracks or restoration. Minor wear on the gold webbing on the exterior as well as to the medallion areas on the inside of the neck. (pictured)
