I ended up in Italy flying a B-17 Bomber with 10 crew and 2 mechanics. We joined other B-17s and B-24s and bombed all of southern Europe. On one mission, another pilot took my place. My airplane and crew got shot down. One dead, 9 wounded POWs. Learning to fly in the army, I flew over 50 missions. We lost 14 planes out of 27.
