This is one of the best looking espresso machines I have seen, it has great styling. I have always really wanted a La Pavoni piston/lever style machine, until I saw this unit for about 1/3 the price. I kind of expected a little better quality from this KitchenAid Pro-Line espresso machine. It functions adequately enough if all you want is a double shot of espresso, a americano, or traditional Italian cappuccino. The 2nd boiler is much too small, if you want to make a medium size or larger latte, mocha, breve, etc. The frother/2nd boiler will only efficiently heat about 4-6 ounces of milk or other liquid at a time. If you wish to heat a larger volume you will have to microwave it or heat it by another method. When you do this, the milk does not seem to froth as well. I am assuming that trying to froth warm milk is much like trying to make whipped cream with hot cream, just doesn't work. The milk fat needs to be cold in order to hold the tiny bubbles that make a good froth. Aside from the secondary/ frother boiler being undersized I am very happy with this machine. It does have a tendency to be a little noisy at times, but not any more noisy than most other machines. After I was able to get my grinder dialed in to the right setting I was able to pour some pretty nice shots with lots of beautiful crema. One of the best features about this machine is the water reservoir set-up. Unlike many other machines out there you don't have to wait for it to cool down to add water to it. My last 2 machines had to be cooled and have their pressure relieved before attempting to refill them. Failure to do so would result in spraying yourself with scalding steam or water, just like opening a hot automobile radiator! Thankfully filling the reservoir is very easy, it simply slides to the left or right and you pour more water in. This is nice because this unit is pretty heavy, well over 20 pounds and would be difficult to move all the time to fill it. I am pretty happy with this machine's initial quality for the amount that I paid for it, I definitely would not pay full retail price for one of these units.Read full review
I had such high hopes for this machine...it should've been great considering it has dual boilers and a solid metal housing. I figured it would last me 10 years easy. Unfortunately, my machine has suffered from internal water leaks, and what appears to be a design defect causing the metal frame of the machine to corrode and the paint to flake off. I called KitchenAid to get parts, and they've quit supporting this machine. So much for 10 years of service.
I love the simplicity and great looks of this machine. It also makes great espresso. And the two pumps make it easy to brew coffee and steam milk no waiting. The price is very affordable 499.00 new if you shop around. I keep one in my home and one in my RV.
This is my second espresso machine and it really is great. Double boiler with Gaggia engineering allows you to pull a really great shot. Being able to steam milk at the same time as you pull a shot means you can make 2 cappucinos quickly and get out the door.
It's worth the time and money for a great morning coffee.
