I have always enjoyed television series that are different, quirky even. Rescue Me ticks all the boxes for an excellent television series. Its main character Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary)is a New York firefighter who has lived through 9/11 and is still living with the aftermath having lost fellow firefighters including his cousin Jimmy. He tries his best to get through each day and the trials that they bring. What is "quirky" about this programme is that Tommy and only Tommy can still communicate with Jimmy and sees him all the time, they have conversations, arguments even fights. The other characters are excellent, Tommy's dad is played by Charles Durning no other actor could play this part as well, after being widowed he "finds" love again with a string of "lady friends" and accompanied by his brother enjoys life to the full with some hilarious consequences. Tommys long suffering wife (Andrea Roth) who lives across the street with his three children is left to pick up the pieces after Tommys alcohol fueled binges and his very "high" sex drive get him into all sorts of trouble. The other firefighters of Truck Company 62, are men of all ages and backgrounds but they are all bound together by the events of 9/11 and how their lives are never really going to be the same as a consequence of its tragedy. This programme has some hilarious moments and some heart wrenching ones. All in all its an excellent example of American Television at its very best. Series Two of Rescue Me has recently been released on DVD and having seen that on television can confirm that Series Two is just as good as Series One I will be checking EBay listings to purchase that as well.Read full review
This programme has everything you need, constant laughter with real drama thrown in. Based after one of the most horrific events of our generation, it tackles this in the right way and Dennis Leary plays his character brillently. You are able to relate to his pain and suffering but you will laugh yourself silly with the situations he gets into. The whole cast and crews make this series fantastic.
Its brillant, Dennis Leary writes it wiht just the right amount of drama and humor. It is totally captivating from the start i cant recommened it enough
