Although it has been discontinued for years now (and eventually replaced by its Thunderbolt brother), the sound is still fantastic. Considering with its original price at US$2,000 or above, the built-in quality is excellent. Unlike others, it is designed and manufactured in US and the whole box is simply solid. The A/D conversion is absolutely outstanding. Very little distortion and detailed signals. The difference is modest yet audible if I compared this with my MOTU 828mkii. I believe my MOTU 828mkii did lose some signals during conversion but Apogee simply gets all the necessary details from my outboard. If you're mixing your song with a lot of outboard gears, you MUST need a decent A/D converter like Apogee Ensemble. Also, the D/A conversion is true with minimal distortion. I can listen to more details from this interface compared with my previous ones (MOTU 828, or even Apollo Twin). Warm and detailed! You might be right that this interface is no longer supported by Apogee or Apple and no updates of driver will be available in the future. If updating your MacOS is a must, then don't buy it as Apple stopped updating Firewire driver in their latest OS and Apogee interfaces rely on the Core Audio driver heavily. However, I am using MacOS El Capitan with no issue. I can say I found difficulties in setting up the driver at the very beginning and it took me days to make it work; however, once it's set it's done! You can easily get one with US$500 (25% of its original price!!) or even less now. Considering what you can possibly get for a brand new item, how can you ask for more with this price tag? New things do not always mean good or better. But I'm satisfied with this old beast and recommend to my fellow colleagues with no hesitation.Read full review

Audio quality is quite good. Mic pres were disappointing. Software makes latency free monitoring very easy once you understand it Read the manual.

The unit is great and it does appear to have a bit more headroom than my Focusrite Saffire, and my MOTU 896. However the software interface is a bit clunky.

GREAT product! Set it up with mac and logic and very easy use with the maestro software. Proof that you cant go wrong with Apogee. Very easy to use and great converters.
Excellent preamps (4 of them), routing software and conversion makes this Mac only interface pretty hard to pass up.
