Bought this to replace the free router that came with my subscription. The free router was reasonably ok but seems to give errors and slow access after being powered on for too long. After reading reviews and monitoring the prices, I got this router and configured it for my Internet connection. Replace the modem and works first time. Used the smart connect option for the WiFi and works like a charm. This allows the use of a single SSID but works over the dual-band channels on the WiFi, and switches seamlessly. However, at times (being powered on for a few days, noticed that the transmission power seems to have dropped. However, a reboot of the router has rectified it (will have to monitor this). There is AiMesh but I have not tried it out. A good feature to have if I have trouble covering the house with Wifi, but at the moment, this router is doing fine. My Internet connection is via NBN HFC with TPG.Read full review

Is a nice looking unit and provides some nice features that outshine my old Netcomm. I expected the WiFi performance to well and truly exceed my netcomm due to the substantial price difference and the use of 4 external antennas however it didn't. I find the positioning of the USB 3 port under a flip down cover on the front of the unit to be weird as I have a USB 3 external disk permanently parked there meaning the cover is always open and as the USB 2 port is on the back and I have a disk parked there as well I have cables poking out both sides of the unit. I think both usb ports should be on the back and they should both be USB 3. The unit is designed to look sciencefiction'ie so the LED lights on top have icons under them that are very small and very hard to decipher.especially for old eyes like mine. It lacks built in VOIP which the netcomm has so to me it's a bit of a coin toss which unit is better. I reckon for a general user the Netcomm is fine. If you have gamers in the household and don't need voip and don't mind the extra cost then this one will make you very happy.Read full review

excellent router with a lot of features (like link aggregation and traffic monitoring). But Wi-Fi speeds were WAY below what I was expecting. Using iperf3 I'm getting below 60/Mbps (megabits) on mobile devices and below 230Mbps on a desktop & laptop (both with good/new AC wifi), all tests where done between the Wi-Fi device and a LAN computer. Maybe these are good speeds but I expected better, It was hardly an upgrade from my old Asus router (a 2014 model).

Excellent product - does just about everything a home user could want, the ONLY problem with this product is... If you are intending to use this product with a 3/4G mobile broadband USB dongle, then forget it. There are only a few 'specific' USB devices that work with this router, (there is a compatibility list on ASUS website) and none for OPTUS in Australia. ASUS technical support are absolutely no help and it appears that the compatibility list has not been updated since the devices' release. Buyer beware, as nowhere, in any documentation is it mentioned that your USB dongle will not work properly unless you have one of the 'compatible' devices in the ASUS list. I have tried in vain to have ASUS upgrade their firmware to include my OPTUS E3372 4G USB device.

We have only had this RT-AC88U for a week an a bit so cannot comment on its long term reliability. It has specialised gaming advantages also which we do not use and cannot comment on. We had an RT-AC68U up until getting this one. The previous was an outstanding unit. Fast, good range, takes a USB drive, had no over-heating problem, was easy to operate via its excellent software and highly configurable. The AC88 is all that but shows stronger signal in hard to receive places, it has 8 in lieu of 4 wired connections, seems faster (likely more to do with slightly better signal than speed I think) it also seems easier to make new connections; was a dream to set-up. I expect it will give the same very solid and reliable, very fast preformance as the previous version perhaps with a bit more speed and utility. On the basis of its speed and configurability along with the reliability of its older sibling I happily recommend it.Read full review
