This unit is dated. It's limited by today's standard for hand held aviation GPS. It reads in Greyscale, not color. It's claim to fame is as a reliable, light weight pictorial GPS that is easy to use. It was one of the first, and best when new. I bought one recently on ebay for those features, also for the nostalgic aspect that it is the first type of hand held GPS to fly into space. Mike Melville flew Burt Rutan's Spaceship One with a Garmin GPS III pilot mounted in the cockpit! My unit works flawlessly. When buying, look for pictures with the unit powered up so you can be sure it works and the screen is free of defects.
The Garmin GPS III is easy to use, has a good epe (12 ft, as good as my GPS 92 which is an aviation GPS). Menus are not as easy to work with as on the GPS 92, and it does not give cross track error and numeric read out of the heading. The compass tape is easy to use as is the compass rose. It's a good GPS system and it is really fitted well for driving or boating. The case is angled so you can set it on the dash and still see it easily (my GPS 92 was meant to be mounted on a Yoke Clip, so it was harder to use in the car or boat.
Nice little unit but a little time consuming to navigate around the functions. Refresh is slow when zooming and scrolling around the screens. Make sure you use high quality batteries because it is a battery eater. Screen is small as well but backlight is sufficient for daylight use. Aquires Sats quickly and updates positions quickly. Not for serious navigation in quick disision needs but good for general navigation from point to point

What I like about the Garmin GPS III+ is that it is reliable, easy to use and very durable. I owned one for quite sometime in the military and unfortunately I gave it away to a foreign counter part who also liked it. Garmin makes some excellent products and I have now purchased over 5 GPS III+ in a time frame of 15 years. Each one of them has saved me a multitude of uncertainty and I have even placed my life in the accuracy of this type of GPS unit. I am Very happy with this product. It is too bad that Garmin discontinued this product. Socrates J. Dominguez
