Having spent my entire adult life yoyo dieting (in excess of 30 years), I visited an obesity clinic with a view to having lapband surgery. The obesity clinic recommended reading "If not dieting, then what?" so I bought it and read it. If you're looking for yet another weight loss program, this isn't for you but if you're looking for a sensible long-term approach to being healthy, I highly recommend this book. It is a practical guide to leading a healthy lifestyle which is doable and realistic. It is a welcome relief from being nagged about a healthy weight range of 20 to 25 BMI, exercising at least an hour every day, avoiding "bad" foods, etc. Instead, it explains why we are all different and why we should not focus on the scales. Foods are discussed in terms of "everyday" foods and "sometimes" foods rather than "good" or "bad" foods. There are tips in the book that will almost certainly help you to lose weight. I followed some of those tips and lost a few kilos quite easily, without feeling deprived or miserable. Another big plus about this book is that it does not suggest that excess weight is the result of a lazy, bingeing individual, as is suggested by so many other "experts". Having read the book, I am far less likely to feel guilty or blame myself for being overweight. Feeling better about yourself puts you in the right frame of mind for following the healthy eating and exercise guidelines. You are also more likely to have realistic expectations about your "ideal" or "goal" weight and the journey to a healthier you will not seem so daunting. Don't waste enormous amounts of money on weight loss clinics, this book is all you will need. And by the way, I am no longer considering lapband surgery. I believe this book is a much healthier and safer approach to long-term health.Read full review
