Get a light meter, learn how an SLR camera works, compose some shots, and shoot some film. This is a great camera/lens combo to learn on with a fast F1.4 lens (harder to come by) and a basic, basic camera setup. If you are under the age of 20 or so, you will need to learn how this thing works (as you probably haven't had to use one in your lifetime) and you can learn a lot online ... if you are an old-timer and a photographer you have probably already owned this camera. The Minolta SRT101 is the first SLR that Annie Leibovitz shot on ... get one, they're cheap, built to last a lifetime, easy to use, and feel great in your hands. It's a true analogue experience.

The Minolta SRT 101 is a relatively famous camera which has a moderate selection of very solid features. First, the light meter on this model is easy to understand and make good use out of- this is assuming the meter still works, which is definitely possible, as I've come to discoverer. (Side Note : The battery for this Camera is still a mystery to me- Ive heard that it took a PX625 (a mercury model no longer made)- Ive used a Varta 625A to replace it- it fits and seems to work well, but what do I know (the voltage may be off or something like that)) Second, the view finder is relatively bright and conveniently features on the bottom a marker for the shutter speed you have selected (allowing you to select you S.S. while you are focusing and managing the exposure - pretty nifty!!) Third, the operation for the ISO/ Shutter Speed is predictably compact and versatile- from ISO 50-6400 and Shutter Speed from B and 1 second to 1/1000th of a second. Fourth, opening the back for the film is easy- and loading the film is probably the easiest design I have ever used. Push the leader film into a tight holding winding section and load easily. Ive used other designs and this is BY FAR easier, faster, and more reliable. Fifth, lenses. This camera provides access to a plethora excellent lenses. I recommend an ROKKOR PF 55MM F1.7 or ROKKOR PF 50MM F1.4/F1.2. These lenses are cheap and usually work very well. Included in my purchase was the former (55MM F1.7) and it works exceptionally well. Sixth, there is a self timer- whether its accurate (should be about 10 seconds) or not its kinda besides the point since it has one at all- if your self timer works then that is another useful function. Seventh- Depth of Field Preview Button- This is an unusual feature that surprised me. Essentially this allows the user to set their aperture and preview, at the push of a button, the potential Depth of Field you will see in your shot. This emphasized to me another essential feature of this camera and its lenses that one should not take for granted- that the aperture will remain in the view finder nice and bright - but will take the correct aperture at the time of shooting a photo. I believe this is something that Minolta pioneered-which basically light compensation. For example, on a bright sunny day, using F16, you wouldn't get much light through the lens- making it hard to focus- this camera compensates for the darkness in your view finder and will still take the shot at F16. The Depth of Field Preview allows you to see the actual image you will be taking without said light compensation - in theory- showing the viewer the correct amount of the image that is in focus (this said, I havent really made much use of the D.O.P. preview button yet) Summary- All in All- I was terribly surprised at how useful and versatile this camera is- This is a STUPENDOUS starter camera and most makes of it (and variations of it) can be found all over ebay for pretty cheap. Buy with caution though, and definitely check the various features to see that it works correctly- I was extremely fortunate with the model I bought- in many regards. Happy Shooting!Read full review

The Minolta SR-T 101 was my first SLR and I really loved the CLC (contrast light compensation) metering due to its ability to capture an image well while picking up objects that were in the shade. This is a great 35mm SLR.

For how old the Camera is it seems to be working good the light meter doesn't work because the batteries are old.
