Sennheiser IE8 has appeared to be much superior in term of audio quality to UE, SHURE, Etymotic in the same or similar price range. IE8's sound is natural and spacious. Highly praised multi-driver earphones by mentioned above brands I tried and used for a a few years couldn't come even close to that. The only my complain is sounds isolation: none of shipped with IE8 tips (their "extended set of ear adapters") provide good isolation for my ears. Third party tips in turn degrade audio quality.
Actually this is not the right ie8 earphones I purchased. It was just the regular ie8 earphones. I received a good deal on a new pair and have barely used them since I also own Shure se530s. Nevertheless I'm only rating this 4 stars because of usage time logged. I do think they are very good in ear headphones, and I am very happy with the sound. One side note: I did notice the jack doesn't always have the greatest connection to my mp3 player since it does lose sound if I jostle the wire around a little. A little concerned.
I have not tried the Sennheiser IE 8 (so I cannot attest an apples to apples compaison) however I have owned the Sennheiser CX 890i (at the time was a $250 headset) and various other decent products. In comparison I find this DIY headset to be worth its wieght in gold. It is made only high quality parts, the cable has a very good electrical conductivity (a requirement for a premium headset IMHO), the overall look of the product is very eye catching. Personaly I cannot find a better headphone in this price range, everything about this headset is better than my Sennheiser CX 890i. I have very few cons for this product, the aluminium cylander at the Y break in the cable tends to get snagged on my desk (adding a little epoxy to this could be benificial). The only other thing I can think of would be to offer a optional in-line mic. Overall Im fully satisfied with this product :DRead full review

These are my absolute favorite IEM (In Ear Monitors) I have ever used. Some may find it a bit challenging to get a correct seal but once you do so you will find your self immersed in your music. It will make you rediscover your music collection. Songs that I didn't enjoy listening to before got my attention with the IE8's. I highly recommend these IEM's. They are very dynamic and engaging. They also require a long burn in period (meaning they will sound better the more you use them. I'd say at least 250 hours of burn in before the drivers settle down, so don't judge them just out of the box as they will improve greatly with burn in.
These are a good alternative to other high end earphones like the Shure SE530 and Westone 3. It all depends on what kind of music you use them for. They're the best I've ever heard for head thumping house, hip-hop, trance, lounge, and other bass heavy genres. But their heavy bass may feel too muddy and unrefined with jazz, acoustic folk, and classical. Wouldn't make them my everyday earphones - the Westone 3s are more of the all around choice - but I certainly would include them in my collection due to their unique bass performance.
