I love the first Tenchu game, so this game had a lot to live up too. I give Tenchu II credit for trying some new stuff but so much of it doesnt work as well. I had three big gripes with the sequel. 1- The music, there is now silence through most of the game. It is more ambient with wind blowing or cicadas chirping but I sorely missed the spectacularly good music from the first game. 2- Most of the game is during the day, Why!? You have ninjas running around in black during the middle of the day, it doesnt work with the weak draw distance of the PS1 and doesnt match up with the theme of the game. Which brings me to the next point. 3- Backgrounds- They added still backgrounds which would be fine except for the notorious Playstation pop up. So you will being walking towards something and a mountain just fades in front of the back ground, tree, building or whatever. Even the foggy day levels and night levels had these backgrounds. Its jarring and looks plain bad. 4- Level design, the levels are weak compared to the first game. A lot of jagged outdoor levels that have little to post up against. Few city levels and an annoying water mechanic that runs counter to the core principle of the game- stealth. They also changed the grappling hook to only hook on ledges, I didnt like it but not a big deal. Same with weaker looking character models. The whole game was brighter, more colorful which I didnt care for. The enemies were downright goofy a points. Overall more of an anime feel to the art design. They did add some cool stuff. The girl now runs faster that Rikimaru, which is good since in the first game Rikimarus sword is better than her twin daggers. The sight distance is longer which is nice, but they combined it with a larger ki meter which makes the game quite a bit easier (your ki meter will show an enemy near long before they can spot you). The level editor was also a disappointment. You have 5 levels of height, not nearly enough, and a fairly small area to build. I didnt mess with it a lot because I hated the building materials, after 7 levels I had Mountain area, Inside a castle, Swamp area, Sea area, training area (caves), sea temple and village. Its like playing wilderness ninja. Its Tenchu so still fun, but a lot of added stuff that doesnt feel like it meshes well with the core concepts of the game. Sneaking along walls, rappeling to roofs, not swimming because you want to be quiet. The first Tenchu was a masterpiece, this to me was mediocre, which isnt bad, just not up to the standard the first one set. I give it 3 1/2 stars.Read full review

A very fine game. Good graphics for the time, and one of the first ninja games to feature stealth in the gameplay. I would definitely recommend this game to any who are a fan of realistic ninja games. This game features classic weapons, throwing stars, sword, grappling hook, etc. Also, the game does require stealth to survive. There are a lot of enemies, that are easiest to dispatch through stealth. Good luck and happy gaming.

The game itself is quite well made for a PS1 game, though the voice acting could be a little bit better. Tenchu 2 is also a bit clunky with its controls, being somewhat like a tank game. Fortunately, it only takes a moment to get used to it. The story is where this game is most interesting as there are three characters and all of which have different paths that all separate and coincide. What they do is relevant to eachother's plots and to the best of my knowledge, the only other game like this was Resident Evil 2- and that only had two characters. The music is memorable, the characters are interesting, and even though the graphics are somewhat dated any fan of a good stealth game can appreciate this game.
This game does everything the original did, ONLY BETTER! You Continue as Rikimaru or Ayame, except now they are full fledged Ninja's! They take on new tasks and new enemies in a beautiful environment (for 2000) and kill them with new stealth moves and cutscenes. Story, controls and gameplay are all very good in this installment. Nothing new there! Still superb! The new boards in this game are excellent and you must really use your wits to be sneaky. The music is still the very best of feudal Japan! This is a must-have addition to the Tenchu series! It's still an awesome game 6 years later!
Brings back alot of good memories thanks, this game was also very well taken care of.
