Powerful playing, singing and songwriting.
I bought this album after having heard (and seen) Eric on the Joe Satriani/Steve Vai/Eric Johnson album and video "G3 Live." I was very impressed by his technique and loved the tones he used (how ironic). "Tones" is a very impressive album. Some of it is very soft and melodic, such as the excellent "Emerald Eyes," and some of it is very powerful, such as "Zap." I heard "Zap" on the G3 album before I heard the album version, and let me tell you, Eric is a perfectionist! I've never heard anyone so perfectly reproduce something live as he does. This is a very good jazz/pop album and it really made me take notice of one of the modern masters of the guitar, the incomparable Eric Johnson.

Experimental genius.
This is the first full-length album by the guitar wiz known as Joe Satriani. It is somewhat different from his other albums, especially in the tones. His guitars have a very unique sound that he didn't really use later on. The production value is also amazing. This is one of the sweetest sounding cds I own. Listen to the song "The Snake" (a cool song that was actually spliced together from discarded tape right before deadline) about half way through and you'll see what I mean (turn it up loud, too!) There are some great songs on this one and gave a glimpse at the amazing things he would do later on. I give this one a four because it is definitely not his best stuff, but some of these songs ("Rubina" "Memories" and "Hordes of Locusts") sound awesome live and it is great to hear the original versions. I really like this cd, but I would recommend that this be bought after someone has become an established fan.

Unbelievable and unmistakeable!
Once upon a time, I taped a song from a university radio station that I thought was amazing. Then, 5 or 6 years later, I bought "Alien Love Secrets" by Steve Vai and I noticed that one brief burst of speed on the song "Juice" sounded just like that song I taped so long ago. I thought "whatever." At any rate, I was blown away by A.L.S. and decided to buy another Steve Vai album. That was "Passion and Warfare" and, lo and behold, "Erotic Nightmares" was the song I had taped many years before. I was ecstatic! The rest of the album blew me away, even more so than A.L.S. "Erotic Nightmares" is one of the coolest, most impressive guitar songs anyone will ever hear! "Answers" has many cool sounds and effects in it that sets it apart from many Vai songs. "Ballerina 12/24" is a prime example of how crisp all of Steve's recordings are and how great a producer he is. "For the Love of God" is a nice, thoughtful number that ranks up there with some of Steve's friend Joe Satriani's ballads. "The Audience is Listening" is an uber-guitar number that should be used as the blueprints on how to become a guitar-god. "Sisters" is another softer number and...I could go on about this album, but believe me when I say, this is an amazing album that deserves a prominent place in any guitar fan's collection.
