Level 42 -Retroglide- Mark & co. back at their best!!
1 of 1 found this helpful I had heard the title track, and to be honest wasn't overly impressed. I'm a long time level 42 fan, so bought the album anyway.
I remembered while listening to the album that I was often left feeling slightly 'let-down' on initial listening to all of their albums since about 1985.
It's a trick!! subliminally you're absorbing bits of songs you didn't even know you'd heard! within a couple of days you can't get certain hooks out of your head!
This album's like one of those 're-imagining' remakes of one of your favourite films, using modern technology. All the best bits of level 42 from the early/mid 80s are here in abundance, only missing the slightly abstract pictures painted by Phil Gould's lyrics.
From the opening of 'Dive into the Sun' right through to the end of 'All I Need', it's pure level 42 as we know and loved them.
Mark & Boon seems to have been playing a little game of 'Let's get the oddest words possible into these songs'...... we have 'spaghetti', 'phuket', 'aesthetically atheist', 'paparazzi' etc but the winner is.. 'SCHOONER'!! jeez! that word may be in 'sloop john b' but it sure sounds odd here!
Standout tracks for me are: 6.Retroglide and 5.Sleep Talking
These 2 tracks are the whole 'Staring at the Sun' album mixed with 'Fashion Fever' and 'Sunbed Song'!
