The adidas Predator was first released in 1994 and is based on a prototype design created by Craig Johnston, a former Australian footballer. The typical design includes rubber patches and stripes on the top of the shoe – these are designed to improve friction between the boot and the ball. Leather was used to create the original adidas Predator, and there were just a few colours available, including black with white stripes and red accents.
The Predator was discontinued in 2015 but reintroduced again in 2017 – and since then there have been several variations of the shoe. The Predator Rapier design was the first football boot to come in a variety of colours, Predator Touch featured rectangular Traxion (TRX) studs rather than the usual round studs, and the Predator Accelerator version has a re-engineered TRX outsole, asymmetrical lacing, fore-footed rubber vamps sewn into the leather, and a "feet you carry" insole.
Other editions include the Precision which had replaceable Traxion studs of varying lengths to adjust to suit various ground conditions; along with the Mania, Pulse, Predator X and Predator 18 – just to name a few.
