Amazon entered the tablet market in 2011 with the introduction of its Amazon Fire tablet. In the years since then, its offerings have diversified into a range of different tablets that can provide entertainment to kids and adults alike.

How is an Amazon tablet different from a smartphone or a laptop?

Unlike the common smartphone, an Amazon tablet is designed to work primarily with a home Internet connection provided by dual-band Wi-Fi. The tabletsEUR(TM) screens are generally larger as well with sizes ranging from 17 to 25 centimetres.

Like a smartphone, all of the units sport a 2MP camera that can record 720p HD video. Entertainment-based Amazon Fire tablets are designed to bring video, web surfing and audio to the home user. Many have been equipped with the Alexa app, which is Amazon’s artificial intelligence voice assistant. The Alexa app can be used on a compatible Fire tablet to find videos or music, tell you the weather or even control devices in your smart home. What different types of Amazon tablets are available?

Amazon has five different tablet models available, each with its own unique specifications and software. These include:

  • Fire 7: This unit provides a 17cm screen and is considered the basic offering of AmazonEUR(TM)s lineup. The display’s resolution is 1024 x 600 pixels and the battery will last you up to eight hours of continuous app use.
  • Fire HD 8: As the name suggests, this unit provides an HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The battery lasts longer than the Fire 7, offering up to 12 hours of continuous use. This device is equipped with Dolby Audio, providing clarity to songs and video audio.
  • Fire HD 10: With a 25cm HD display that provides a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels at 224 ppi, this is the biggest of the tablets. The battery provides 10 hours of use before needing to be recharged. A 1.8 GHz processor gives this tablet some power as well. Many devices have been equipped with hands-free Alexa assistance, meaning that the AI will respond to your voice without the click of a button.
  • Fire 7 and HD 8 Kids Edition: Built for kids, these tablets include strong cases designed to withstand accidents, drops and falls. Their screens are 17 and 20cm respectively. These devices are optimal for parents looking to get their kids something safe and stock-full of kid-friendly apps.

Are Amazon tablets customisable?

These devices usually come with storage between 8GB to 64GB, but their storage capacities can be upgraded to 256GB. The Kids Edition tablets are always black, but their included covers can be coloured blue, pink or yellow. The adult-oriented devices can be customised with the following colours:
