BMW motorcycles are some of the most rewarding machines to restore and tinker around with. Widely available and easier to transport, collector and collector motorcycles can easily be the heart of your next mechanic’s pet project.

BMW Cruisers

Feel the wind in your hair as you sail through the highway on your classic R1200C. These intimidating cruiser bikes are heavy, powerful, and has excellent endurance for long cross-country jaunts. Manufactured by BMW Motorrad from 1997 to 2004, it features a foldable passenger seat that could fold up to function as the driver’s backrest. It had a variety of special models, some with beefier designs and others with improved electronics systems for anti-theft.

BMW Sport Bikes

Launched in 1986, the K1 was BMW’s version of a sportbike that had full fairings. It was largely based on the K100 engine but with four valves per cylinder, making it capable of almost 100hp. While classic bikes with electronic ignitions are rare, BMW sport bikes are easy to modify so that you can conveniently start your bike and leave the crank starter as a backup.

BMW Sport-Touring Motorcycles

The biggest standout in the BMW K100 line-up was the K100RS. Often called the “Flying Brick”, it was a bold endeavour on BMW’s part because it was the first in the brand to be liquid cooled and to feature an ABS option. Standard K100s have four-cylinder engines that burned fuel cleanly. The R1100RS combines the speed of a sportbike with the comfortable ride posture of a touring bike.

BMW Oldies but Goodies

Post-WWII BMW motorcycles still float around in collector’s markets, and while they aren’t the faster bikes around, they are still marvels of the engineering prowess of Germany. The BMW R2, for instance, is a modest 200cc single-cylinder bike with a dashing personality with a spacious frame and exposed internals.
