The Beginnings of Balenciaga
Known as the architect of haute couture, Cristóbal Balenciaga helped to shape fashion in a way no other designer could. Spanish-born Balenciaga founded his first fashion house in 1918, in San Sebastian, Spain. The talented designer soon followed that up with several more stores in Spain, before moving to the centre of fashion at that time. The one and only Paris. Balenciaga set up shop in Paris in 1937, opening the House of Balenciaga in the spot it still sits in today.
Admired by his peers, Balenciaga was described as “the master of us all”, by Christian Dior. Coco Chanel described Balenciaga as a “true couturier”, saying, “Only he is able to cut fabric, assemble it and sew it with his own hands. The others are merely draftsmen.” Hubert de Givenchy said that Balenciaga created “not only a style but technique,” elaborating on that by saying Balenciaga was “the architect of haute couture”. Today, the Balenciaga brand is owned by French multinational company Kering, offering a spectacular range of high-end women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, accessories, eyewear and a fragrance for women.
