Bedroom Dressers and Chests of Drawers

A crucial component of any bedroom, dressers and/or chests of drawers provide necessary storage for clothing, makeup, accessories or shoes. The top of the piece gives you a spot to display framed photos or favourite knick-knacks. When shopping for dressers, there are many styles and designs to pick from, so consider existing furniture for a good match. For instance, if your existing bedroom furniture is mostly white, you might want to opt for a white chest of drawers.

Furniture Materials

Begin by choosing a material that appeals to you. If your bed is wood and you'd like to match it to other bedroom furniture, such as a dresser, opt for a wood dresser or chest of drawers. Other materials include glass, fabric upholstered pieces, mirrored designs, particle board and plastic.

Chest of Drawers

The main difference between a chest of drawers and a dresser is usually size. A chest of drawers is typically comprised of stacks of drawers that form a vertical piece of furniture. Both types of furniture offer multiple types of storage for clothing and accessories. A chest of drawers that's tall may also be referred to as a tallboy. This is a slim, slender chest that features roughly six or more drawers, giving you a space-saving alternative for clothing storage.

Dresser

A dresser is larger than a chest of drawers, with horizontal drawers side by side and room on top as well. Some dressers have a mirror on top for easier dressing. A dresser typically matches other pieces, including a chest of drawers, bed and nightstand. Matching pieces create a polished, pulled-together look. Dressers range from smaller versions with four drawers to larger, oversized versions with up to eight drawers.

Dresser Styles

There are many styles to consider when you purchase a dresser, so keep your personal aesthetic in mind, in addition to the existing room decor. Some styles to consider include modern, rustic, vintage, retro and contemporary.
