Bohemian Czech crystal glass for a clear-cut case of perfection

Bohemian crystal largely refers to the high quality, fine glass, and crystal items produced in the regions of Bohemia and Silesia, which are now within the Czech Republic.

An abundance of natural resources in the region began the tradition of Czech glassmaking, which has long been recognised internationally for its exquisite quality and craftsmanship. The commitment to producing the highest quality crystal glassware inspired innovative designs elevating the production of crystal glass to an art form.

Throughout the centuries, the artisanal craft has been perfected, with engraving, cutting, and heavy enamel application as some of the most sought-after skills of these glassworkers. The results of these skills have seen the production of detailed fine costume jewellery, beautiful bowls, vases, and extravagant chandeliers which can be seen in palaces all over the world.

If it's a touch of the baroque grandiose you're after, a pair of gold-rimmed Bohemia crystal champagne flutes are the ideal anniversary gift, as is a classic crystal decanter with diamond cut detail along with a set of crystal highball tumblers.

Crystal versus glass

Much of the glass made into crystal today is still mixed with other minerals, including lead, though there are many lead-free options. Europe has much stricter regulations about how much mineral must be contained within it to be considered crystal. This is in sharp contrast to places such as the United States that have much looser regulations, if any, in place.

A sure way to tell the difference between crystal and glass is to run a wet finger along the rim of a crystal glass it will produce a musical tone, whereas glass will not. Additionally, because crystal can be made much thinner than glass, if the rim of a piece is notably thin, it is most likely to be crystal.
