Datalogic Barcode Scanners

Datalogic Barcode Scanner

Technology is the name of the game. Anymore, it isn’t uncommon to walk into any store and see a barcode on a product. With that, having an imager or barcode scanner is a must for just about every establishment. Before you pick a Datalogic scanner, go ahead and ask yourself a few simple questions to ensure you get the proper product for your needs.

What Type of Barcodes are You Scanning?

Most people don’t realise there are two different types of barcodes: 1D and 2D. The most common type is the 1D, and you often see these in warehouses and retail stores. 2D barcodes are more advanced and can easily store up to 3000 characters including text, numbers and web addresses. It’s good to know that although 2D scanners will scan both 2D and 1D codes, 1D scanners will only scan 1D codes and will not scan 2D codes.

What is the Distance Between the Barcode and the Scanner?

Each scanner has a rating that refers to the distance between the barcode label and the scanner. The standard range is from contact to .74 metres, and the medium range is from contact up to 1.2 metres. There is also a long range, which is between .6 metres up to 7.62 metres and extended range from .91 metres up to 18 metres. When you work in a warehouse and have to scan barcodes high on a shelf, it's best to have a long or extended range scanner would make the job easier.

What is the Work Environment?

The workplace determines the ruggedness needed in a tool. If dropped, will it land on carpet or concrete? Also, are you working in an area where the scanner will be tethered to a computer or a base such as a cash register or are you looking for the freedom of a bluetooth barcode scanner ?

Batteries and Chargers

Handheld scanners often use rechargeable batteries and chargers to keep them up and running. Often the batteries are replaceable, so when you start to have problems keeping a charge, you swap out the old and replace with a new, and you’re back to scanning.
