Making Music History
There are some guitar models that are said to have changed history. First introduced in 1923, the Gibson L-5 was the first modern orchestra guitar, and was thought of as the premier rhythm guitar in the big band era. Made famous by Gene Autry, the Martin D-45 came along a decade later, glittering with abalone to be nicknamed ‘The Pearl’. Fast forward to the 1950s, when electric guitars really hit their stride. This was when the Fender Broadcaster (later named the Fender Telecaster) was introduced. The Model-T of guitars, this was the first guitar of its kind to be produced on a substantial scale.
The 1950s also saw the introduction of the Gibson Les Paul, played by Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, among others. Then came the Fender Stratocaster, which became the most popular, the most played, and the most copied electric guitar ever. Why? The Stratocaster was a game-changer, pure and simple. What followed was the Gibson Flying V, played by Jimi Hendrix, and then later, in the 1980s, the Paul Reed Smith Santana, also known as the Stradivarius of the electric guitar. Carlos Santana – who the guitar was made for – called the guitar “an act of God”. Must have been pretty good then.
