Fossil: The Company
In the world of watches, Fossil has been around a relatively short amount of time. Rolex was founded in 1905, while Seiko can trace its origins back to 1882. Some watch manufacturers’ histories stretch back even further. Blancpain – now owned by Swatch – started out life in 1735. So, with Fossil only being founded in 1984, it’s safe to say, this little ‘upstart’ is most certainly one of the new kids on the block. But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have plenty to offer.
Realising the potential profit in importing retail goods from the Far East, Fossil founder Tom Kartsotis did just that, by importing moderately-prices fashion watches to sell in the American market. Focussing on watches with a retro look, Fossil became increasingly popular, eventually expanding its line to include men’s and women’s watches, jewellery, leather goods and accessories. Today, Fossil makes around 30 million watches each year, 20 million pieces of jewellery, 6 million leather items, and 560,000 accessories. The company sells its product within 150 countries, and has 615 company-owned stores around the world. Not bad for an upstart.
