Fresh Water Aquarium Air Pumps

Freshwater Aquarium Air Pumps

Freshwater aquariums need good water filtration to provide a healthy environment for your fish. The aquarium pump is an essential part of many filter systems, so it’s important to choose the right one.

Why Do I Need an Air Pump?

Toxic chemicals like ammonia can build up rapidly in fish tank water so water filtration is essential for keeping your fish healthy. Some filters come with their own built-in pumps, while others need an external air pump to drive water flow. Corner box filters, sponge filters and external canister filters often need to be attached to a pump. You can also use air pumps to increase water circulation with other aquarium parts like fresh water aquarium air stones.

What Size Pump Do I Need?

Bigger aquariums need bigger air pumps because more water has to be moved. Most fresh water fish tanks should have a filtration system large enough to turn over all the water in the tank at least every fifteen minutes. The appropriate flow rate will depend on your fish, though. Some species, like betta fish, like very calm waters, while others like hillstream loaches thrive in fast-moving water. Messy eaters like plecos also need stronger filtration. Remember that hooking your air pump up to other features like air stones will reduce the airflow that goes to the filter, so increase the size of your air pump accordingly.
