Frost Free/Automatic Defrost Upright & Chest Freezers

Frost Free Freezers

Have you ever opened up your freezer only to be greeted by a thick wall of ice and nowhere to put your food? Then you may have an old freezer that does not have frost free technology. If your freezer is not frost free, you get a build-up of frost around the freezing coils, which can turn into inches of ice unless you manually defrosted it on a regular basis. Manual defrosting can take up to a day to do so is time consuming and labour intensive. By purchasing a frost-free freezer, you will ensure that you do not have ice build ups and can use all of the space inside for storing meat, vegetables and other frozen meals.

How Does Frost Free Work

There are three basic parts to a frost-free freezer including a temperature sensor, a heating coil and a timer. The heating coil intertwines with the freezer coils, turning on by the timer around every six hours so the ice melts off the coils. The temperature sensor turns off the heater when the ice is gone, and the temperature rises above 0 degrees.

More Energy

Frost free freezers can use more energy due to the fact that there is a constant process of heating coils inside the freezer. This may cost you more money in electricity bills over time but may work out as more convenient rather than having to manually defrost your freezer from time to time.

No Freezer Burn

When you expose food to ice, it develops freezer burn as ice crystals form on the surface. The food then gets a strange texture and does not taste good, so you must thrown it out. As frost free freezers do not get ice build ups, your food will not be at the risk of getting freezer burn.

Upright Freezers vs. Chest Freezers

These days most people go for upright freezers as they take up less floor space and are easier to move around. Most modern upright freezers or fridge freezers that you find will be frost free. Chest freezers were always manual defrost, but now some brands are making frost free models too.
