Finding the right dance shoe fit

To really get the most out of your dance training, you need the right dancing shoe. It should be breathable, durable and supportive to reduce the chances of injury, but above all, it must be comfortable. If you’re spending hours on the dance floor, you don’t want your feet crying out in pain from an ill-fit.

Hip hop shoes

Whether you’re locking and popping, break-dancing or enjoying some old school moves, a supportive hip hop shoe is your best friend. When it comes to picking the right one, there are many things to consider. The first is support. Look for a shoe with a flexible sole to help you achieve a wide range of movement, plus a shock-absorbing mid-sole for those heavy hard-core moves. Your shoe should also be relatively lightweight, with variable lace ups so you can adjust it to your foot shape and get a snug fit. A low heel is also good as it’s more stable, especially when you’re executing a move that requires on point balance. If you don’t want a heel, a sneaker may be more your style.

Ballet shoes

Picking the right ballet shoeall comes down to your experience level. If you’re just starting out, a canvas or leather pair is ideal. Leather is popular as it’s breathable, durable and supportive, but it can take a little while to break in. Canvas is a cheaper option so won’t last as long, but is still a fantastic alternative. Some dancers also choose to invest in a quality satin pair for performances.

If you’re more experienced and ready for a pair of pointe shoes, it’s all about ensuring your feet are well protected and supported to reduce the chances of injury. That’s why it’s a good idea to speak to your ballet teacher, as well as a shoe fitting specialist, about your individual requirements. When you know, you can always pop back onto eBay to see if there are any pointe shoe listings that match.

A high impact dance style calls for a breathable shoe, and jazz certainly fits into that category. Both leather and canvas offer excellent breathability, but in the longevity stakes, leather trumps canvas. To really up your ‘cool’ foot factor, look for mesh panels as they provide even more ventilation.
