Kitchen Mechanical Scales

Become A Master Baker With A Set Of Kitchen Mechanical Scales

Picture this – you’re in the middle of making a delicious chocolate cake for your child’s birthday and need to measure a key ingredient from a recipe that’s in grams rather than cups. You get out your digital scale, turn it on and….nothing! The battery is flat, and you don’t have a spare.

Guess what? You’ll never have this problem with a mechanical scale. That’s why many professional kitchens have both digital and mechanical scales.

Are kitchen mechanical scales accurate?

While a mechanical scale may not be quite as accurate as a digital scale, if you have it set up correctly, you will get fairly accurate measurements. Another advantage of using a mechanical scale is that the bowl is already attached, and you don’t have to weigh it separately to get an exact measurement of your ingredients.

Mechanical scales are also attractive enough to have on display

You’ll find a huge assortment of mechanical scales and most of them are attractive enough to have on display on your kitchen island bench or your vintage dresser, especially if you choose one of the vintage-looking ones that are available in stainless steel.

What should you look for when buying a mechanical kitchen scale?

Most importantly, the dial face of the scale should be easy to read so that you can get accurate measurements.

You also want to ensure that the capacity is enough for your needs. For example, smaller scales may only be able to measure up to 500g or 1 kg while larger scales can measure up to 5 kg. However, these larger scales may only go up in 20-gram increments while some of the smaller scales can measure in 5-gram increments.

Consider also, whether the scale is easy to clean. Having a removable bowl is definitely more convenient and makes it easier to wash.

A tare weighing function is also convenient for when you want to weigh more than one ingredient on the same bowl. Most mechanical scales have a button or a knob that you can use to turn the scale back to zero before you add additional ingredients.
