Lexar Camera Memory Cards

A digital camera without a memory card would not get you very far; in such a case, you would have no way to store your photos. Photography has evolved over the years and so have all the devices and accessories you could buy to enhance your experience. Typically, cameras only have a small card included in the package, so you quite soon need a new one. When purchasing camera memory cards, you need to consider several factors, such as speed, capacity, type and your needs. Lexar provides many different kinds of camera memory cards to meet your requirements.

Type

The most common memory card type is the SD and it is compatible with most digital cameras and Lexar also offers a selection of those. SDHC and SDXC subtypes have the same shape and size, but store more photos. Micro SD cards are smaller in form and thus common carriers for people with mobile phones. However, some compact digital cameras are also compatible with them. CompactFlash, or CF cards by Lexar provide fast processing speeds as well as lots of storage space, so they are the common option for advanced DSLRs. CFast cards are speedier variations of the CompactFlash. Memory Stick Duo memory cards, which Lexar also offers, are common in Sony cameras.

Capacity

The SD memory cards provide the least capacity, up to 2 GB. SDHC cards can provide up to 32 GB, while fast and secure SDXC memory cards from Lexar provide up to 512 GB storage space. The microSDHC and microSDXC memory cards from the Lexar range can store 8 to 256 GB worth of photographs. Lexar offers a CompactFlash card with the capacity of 16-256 GB and a CFast card with the capacity of up to 512 GB. The more high-quality photos you take, the more capacity you need. You also require extra capacity when going away from home for a long time. For an amateur photographer, Lexar 32 GB camera memory cards or 64 GB camera memory cards should be sufficient.

Speed

Both the read and write speed of a memory card matter if you want it to be fast. The read speed indicates how quickly you can retrieve the data from the card. If you need to download many large files to your computer, you would probably benefit more from a card with a fast read speed. The write speed describes how fast the camera saves images onto the card. This becomes significant when you take images in continuous shooting mode or use high-resolution cameras that create very large files. Lexars fastest professional memory cards provide up to 540 MB/s read and up to 445 MB/s write speeds.

Amateur or Professional

Amateurs who regard photography as their hobby or are just starting out mostly need to consider the cards capacity. Generally, a small card with up to 8 GB of storage space should be enough to fuel your passion. More serious enthusiasts and professionals need to take into account more factors. As many DSLR cameras produce large files, they need cards with fast write speeds. Another important aspect is the MTBF, the Mean Time Before Failure, which indicates how many hours the card can operate before it fails. The more hours, the better.
