Small Beginnings

From small beginnings, Marks and Spencer has grown from a small single market stall in Leeds to the multi-channel and international retail powerhouse it is today.

Originally founded all the way back in 1884, Marks & Spencer started life more than 130 years ago when Polish immigrant refugee Michael Marks arrived from his hometown of Slonim, Belarus to the north of England with little money and even less English. Initially he was a pedlar, but it didn’t take long before he owned a little market stall in Kirkgate Market. Everything he sold was categorized by price, but he soon decided to stop selling expensive products when he saw how well his penny section was selling with his simple slogan “don’t ask the price, everything is a penny”.

Michael decided he needed a partner who could help him manage his growing business. The man who loaned him some money to go towards the original start-up costs, Isaac Dewhirst recommended his senior cashier Tom Spencer. Tom agreed, investing £300 and Marks & Spencer was officially born, a decade after Michael opened his little market stall on the 28th of September 1894.

Along with his cash investment, Tom also brought considerable skills in accounts and administration, which perfectly complemented Michael’s flair for selling, merchandising and dealing with customers. Marks & Spencer named their stores “Penny Bazaars”, while also keeping their slogan of the penny price, but adding “Admission Free”. Whilst it has been the shopping norm for a long time now, encouraging their customers to browse with absolutely no obligation to buy was certainly unheard of then, and became a very successful marketing ploy. They also displayed their items on trays allowing their customers to browse, while most other retailers kept their items behind the counter on shelves.

The early 1900s were a period of growth for Marks & Spencer after buying a number of its competitors and expanding to 36 Penny Bazaar outlets, which included 12 stores on High Street. The company’s first address was registered in Derby Street, Manchester and was also the first warehouse which had been built for the company, and it helped increase their reach to 145 stores by the year 1915. It was sometime in the early 1920’s that Marks & Spencer began to sell underwear, by far their most famous product, as 1 in 3 women today wear an M&S bra.

Since then, Marks and Spencer has grown into a global brand with almost 1000 stores all over the world. While the company continues to face new challenges in the digital age, M&S have begun to restructure so that they can ensure their business can survive for another century.
