Men’s Nike Cortez Athletic Shoes

The Nike Cortez is one of the most popular and recognisable men’s sports shoes ever made. First launched over forty years ago, they are now available in a huge range of colours and designs.

The Cortez Design

The Nike Cortez had a difficult release process. Bill Bowerman, their designer and co-founder of the company that would eventually become Nike, had originally designed the shoe for Onitsuka Tiger, whose products he distributed before launching Nike as an independent brand. When the Japanese company found that their distributor was making their own sneakers with the same design, they sued. After a long legal battle, a court ruled that both companies could sell the design: Nike kept the Cortez name, while Onitsuka Tiger named their version the Corsair. Nike Cortez athletic shoes finally made their independent debut in 1972, when it was worn by United States athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich, and instantly caught on with the public. The sneaker was Nike’s first major hit and its massive success helped the company to grow into a sportswear giant.

Cortez Culture

Nike Cortez men’s shoes are one of the company’s most iconic designs, alongside other classics like the Air Max line and the Nike Stefan Janoski. These simply-designed men’s sports shoes made it to the big and small screens in several major films and television shows. When Forrest Gump ran across America, he did it in a pair of white and red Nike Cortez.

Cortez Styles

Unsurprisingly for such a popular shoe, Nike makes a wide range of Cortez styles. The most common are solid Cortez athletic shoes and two-colour designs like the red and white Forrest Gump colourway, which Nike manufactures in both leather and fabric styles. Nike has also released more exotic styles of Cortez such as the perforated Nike Cortez Ultra Moire, the lightweight Cortez Flyknit and the Nike Roshe Cortez, which puts the upper of a Nike Cortez on the sole of a Nike Roshe.

The Nike Cortez is an iconic sneaker, and many designers and celebrities have worked with Nike over the years to produce limited editions. Nike also regularly releases limited edition designs and colourways. Recent limited styles have included a three-pair collaboration with tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon, a grey wool Nike Cortez SE and the Cherry Blossom style released in spring 2016.
