Ranunculus Seeds & Bulbs

Brighten Up Your Spring Garden With Ranunculus Seeds Or Bulbs

Ranunculus flowers are delightful cool season flowers that once planted, will put on their gorgeous colourful display year after year. Most gardeners prefer to plant ranunculus bulbs, but you can also grow them by planting ranunculus seeds.

Should you grow ranunculus from seeds or bulbs?

You can choose either, but plants grown from seeds may not bloom in the first year that they’re planted. This is because the plants first must put their energy into developing the bulbs or corms.

These bulbs then store the energy that’s required for the plant to flower. Therefore, if you plant ranunculus bulbs in your garden, they’re likely to flower in their first year depending on when you’ve planted them.

However, ranunculus grown from seed will generally only start to produce blooms in their second year.

When should you plant ranunculus?

Ranunculus should be planted in late summer or early winter if you’re growing them from bulbs and want flowers in the spring. This will give the plants enough chill time in the ground to ensure that you’ll get a lovely display of flowers in spring.

Where should you plant ranunculus?

These lovely flowers are great for mass planting in garden beds and borders. They can also be planted under trees that let some filtered sunlight through. Plus, you can grow these flowers in pots as well.

The good news is that once planted, you can just leave the bulbs in the ground and they’ll come up again every spring. In fact, the bulbs will multiply, and you’ll have more flowers in subsequent years. You might like to add some plant labels so that you know where you’ve planted your bulbs or seeds.

After a few years, you might like to lift some of your bulbs and divide them up so that your plants don’t become too overcrowded. This has the added benefit of providing extra plants that you can grow elsewhere or give away to you family or friends.
