Self-Priming Garden Water Pumps and Pressure Tanks

One of the most common types of non-self-priming garden water pumps are centrifugal pumps, which create pressure within the fluid, creating a pumping action. In most cases, a centrifugal pump, when surrounded by a sufficient amount of water, creates a sufficient pressure differential to cause the water to be pumped. The primary disadvantage of centrifugal pumps is that it can all but shut down if it comes into contact with air. Pumping air requires a lot more force than pumping water, so when air enters the pump mechanism, it can become ‘air bound’ and cease working.

Self-Priming Garden Water Pumps and Pressure Tanks: A Special Type of Centrifugal Pump

Self-priming garden water pumps and pressure tanks are, in essence, centrifugal pumps that combat the problem of air within the pump mechanism. To do so, it creates a new fluid made up of a mixture of air and water, allowing this new fluid to be pumped as easily as water itself. Later in the pumping process, the self-priming water pressure booster pumps and tanks expels the air from the air and water mix by way of an air release line, eventually moving water only.

The Ideal Location

All water pumps operate in an optimal way when they are positioned as close to the liquid intending to be pumped as possible. While a small distance between the water pumps and the liquid to be pumped is acceptable and sometimes unavoidable, there are no circumstances under which the pump can be positioned more than 7m above the surface under which the water supply lies.


While most self-priming water transfer pumps and tanks operate in a similar way, they come in a range of sizes and strengths to accommodate different situations. People choosing a self-priming garden water pump for small or domestic use need little more than a 370W pump, while water pumps designed for real or agricultural use can go as high as 1400W of power. Smaller powered garden water pumps correspondingly require much less electricity to run, and are still able to pump sufficient amounts of water to satisfy the needs of any residential garden.
