Revered by ferrymen, travellers, athletes, and mariners, St. Christopher is deemed as the patron saint of the travellers. People across the world carry an image of the saint in photographs, pendants, statues, and bracelets.
The legend behind the belief
The popular image of the saint is depicted as a giant man carrying a child on his shoulder and a staff in another hand, crossing a flooded river. It is said that the child was Christ Himself, who gave a task to the saint for servitude. The saint who was once determined to serve the strongest in the world had already served the Devil before encountering Christ.
When he saw the Devil flinch from a cross, he set out to look for Christ as Devil feared him. On the way, he met a little child who asked for his help in crossing a river. But during the journey, the river kept swelling and the child started becoming heavy, making it difficult for him to carry. This taught humility to the saint and meaning of service. It’s why he is deemed to be a protector of travellers and against sudden death.
