Fit Window Restrictors for Peace of Mind about the Security and Safety of Your Property

Window restrictors are a security lock affixed to any type of window which allow room ventilation whilst limiting the opening distance. This is to prevent someone either entering or exiting and the opening gap is typically 10 cm. eBay lists a vast array of devices which can be simply fitted to suit all windows.

Are window restrictors suitable for PVC windows?

Window restrictors can be fitted to both horizontal and vertical opening PVC windows in two ways:

  • Concealed: Restrictor arms can be attached to the inner frame window fittings, meaning they are concealed when the window is closed. This sliding safety lock can be set at the required gap and is available in different sizes.
  • Surface mounted: Flexible cables can be used on almost any window type so are an adaptable option. The cable can be adjusted to allow the required opening and altered or released with a key. Relatively low cost, and with colour options, this type of safety catch is a popular choice. These can be purchased with self-drilling screws for ease of fitting and can be used on doors. Restrictor arms can also be surface mounted and are available in white, brown, and silver.
  • Fitting: Both of these types of child safety lock or security lock do not have to be fitted along with window installation and can be retro-fitted relatively simply. There are specialist websites and on-line instructional videos to assist.
What options are available for sash windows?

For vertical sash windows, stop bolts can be attached to the frame at the desired position to prevent the window sliding. A key is then used to remove or depress the bolt for unrestricted opening.

In horizontal sliding sashes on a window or door, a plastic device can be stuck to the frame or glass which when the ‘wings’ are open, restrict the opening. When the device is flattened, the sliding is unrestricted. These are an economical window or door catch option which can be purchased in multiple packs in several different colours and are also very simple to fit requiring no drilling.

How many restrictors do you need on a top hung window?

It is sensible to affix two; one on each side of a top hung window.

Are window restrictors suitable for any type of building?

Whilst a restrictor can be fitted to either domestic or commercial windows, building regulations should be checked to ensure suitability or compliance to health and safety guidelines.
