World War I Military Collectables

As one of the defining events of the 20th century, it's no surprise that World War I has drawn the interest of collectors. Often called the 'Great War', few eras are as popular within the world of militaria collectables.

What Types of Collectables Are Out There?

World War I military collectables, just like other militaria, can include all sorts of items from WWI photos to various medallions, such as:

  • War Medals: Often hanging from coloured ribbons, these honoured exceptional soldiers for their efforts such as the Victoria Cross for valour.
  • Commemorative Items: To show remembrance for the sacrifice of soldiers years later, commemorative badges and prints are also popular to collect.

Where Do These Collectables Come From?

When it comes to collectables like war medals and military badges, it is possible to encounter ones from both sides of the war, namely:

  • The Allied Powers: An alliance that included armed forces of the UK, Australia, France and the United States. Each had separate war medals during this period, just as you'll find among WWII collectables for 1939-1945.
  • The Central Power: Just as the Allied Powers had various military crosses and badges, so did the alliance of Germany, Austro-Hungary and the Ottomans, including the famed Iron Cross medal of Germany.
