Yamamoto x adidas: Unorthodox high-fashion design

When sneaker brand Adidas decided to enter the high-fashion world, the German brand teamed up with a renowned Japanese designer.

Well known for his avant-garde fashion, the Yohji Yamamoto x adidas collaboration resulted in a string of sneaker silhouettes from 2002 which blended athletic appeal with the allure of high-fashion.

The birth of the Y-3 brand

The Y-3 name of this collaboration isn’t just something they chose at random. The Y is for Yohji Yamamoto, the 3 is for the three-stripes logo, and they’re both complemented with a line which signifies the bond and collaboratioon between these two. Together they work together as Y-3, proving sportswear and fashion can do more than simply co-exist.

Avant-garde constructions & designs

Yamamoto trademark style from the Japanese fashion scene has always been centred around unassuming shades of black. So it’s unsurprising that the first Y-3 collab called the Kozoko low-top uses carbon shaded colours mixed with hints of grey. Most of the releases have featured a black and/or white palette with the occasional pops of colours on the sole or tongue.

Since then, the Adidas x Y3 collab has been continuously releasing a steady stream of new sneaker models, such as the Kaiwa, Qasa, Ekika, and more. The adidas Y-3 collab has also unveiled re-imagined versions of Stan Smiths, Superstars, and several other fresh and exciting new silhouettes for sneakerheads to keep in their collections. So there is probably a Y-3 version of your favourite adidas sneaker out there.

Refreshingly stylish lines

Not long after its inception, the adidas Y-3 collab found a way to tap into the market of high-end fashion, which ultimately erased the long-standing borders between athletic attire and haute couture.
