This policy was updated on 7 April 2026 to provide more extensive guidance regarding listing military items on eBay, and is effective as of that date.
Due to government regulations that control the sale of items designed or modified for military or defence purposes (including parts/components, software, and information), some items can't be listed on eBay.
What is the policy?
The following or similar items are not allowed:
- Ordnance, military weaponry (such as grenades and landmines), ammunition and related parts, and most military vehicles including aircraft and ships, even if they have been made "unserviceable" or have been "de-militarised", "de-milled", or otherwise rendered inoperable
- Articles or services specifically designed, developed, configured, adapted or modified for a military application
- Night vision goggles, body armour, technical data manuals, gas masks, and protective clothing with significant military or intelligence applicability
- Military items listed by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR):
- US federal laws and regulations strictly control the import and export of certain military items and information manufactured and developed in the United States, regardless of whether the buyer or seller is located in the United States. In addition to prohibiting the listing of military ordnance and other weapons and equipment, sellers are not allowed to list any items or information covered by Part 121 of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) - opens in new window or tab, also known as the United States Munitions List. We advise sellers to review ITAR Part 121. If the item you want to list is included on the United States Munitions List, it isn't allowed on eBay
- The sale of any information, technical data, instruction manuals, or any other military data covered by ITAR Part 121 in any format is strictly prohibited
- Metal replica hand grenades
- Atomic or nuclear weapons
- Explosives
- Flamethrowers
- Missiles, rockets or launchers
The following or similar items are restricted (allowed only with written authority):
- Items issued to Australian Defence Force members, which remain the property of the Australian Military. These items can only be sold on eBay with written authority from the Minister for Defence or someone the Minister has authorised in writing. Upon request, eBay may require any seller of Defence Force items to provide this written authority
- Items containing the word Anzac that are regulated under the Protection of Word "Anzac" Act 1920 - opens in new window or tab (Cth) and Protection of Word "Anzac" Regulations 1921 - opens in new window or tab (Cth). These items can only be sold on eBay with the written authority of the Minister for Veterans Affairs or a person authorised in writing by the Minister. Upon request, eBay may require any seller of items containing the word Anzac to provide this written authority. Further information about this requirement can be found on the Department of Veterans' Affairs website - opens in new window or tab
Activity on eBay is required to follow this policy, the eBay User Agreement and all applicable laws, as well as respect the rights of third parties. If it doesn't, eBay may take action consistent with applicable laws and the eBay User Agreement, and may even be legally required to do so. Such actions may include, as an example only: Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.
