One of my favorite books of all time. And it is a good "entry point" story for entering Tolkien's world of Middle Earth.The Hobbit is both a prologue to The Lord of the Rings, and in a few places it hearkens back the epic struggle against evil in The Silmarillion, in the First Age of Middle Earth. I can't imagine any Tolkien fan ever tiring of reading and re-reading The Hobbit. This particular edition, in a green binding with slipcase is larger than some others, making it easier to read the runic inscriptions on the cover. The maps inside the cover are also a good scale for reading and viewing. This is a volume I will treasure for life.

the story is awesome and wanted my own hardcover copy. Unfortunately the copy i received has most of the picture panels torn out of the book. This was disappointing as they add to the story

This hardcover collector's edition Hobbit is very beautiful and a pleasure just to look at on your shelf. If you are one of the minority who have not read this treasured tale, you must get this book in some form. I'd say borrow it fromthe library, but save yourself a trip and purchase it. It is a story you will want to share with your kids and may revisit yourself in the future. The story is a classic and suitable for any age. The timeless tale of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit of the Shire, who sets out on an adventure with a wizard and band of racous dwarves to become worldly, wise and one of the most important people in all of Middle-Earth. There is much great adventure within the covers of this book and you will be taken away to a much more majestic world with fantastic creatures and events. Tolkien is truly a master of the tale and has created a beautiful world, with incredibly complex characters, beautiful languages, rituals and grandeur. What I love about eBay is that you can track down better editions of what you read as a child. I ruined two paperback editions toting the Hobbit on family vacations and back and forth to babysitting jobs… and to spend the money on my own hardcover book with my allowance would have taken three years to save up for. So now 40 years later I have an edition worth handing down for generations. Such a great story I’ve actually read the book cover to cover 8 times.
