    Active Pickups? You Still Need an Active DI

    At the Synagogue where I am the senior audio guy, we have a musical Friday night service and the lineup includes a guy who plays a Fender bass with active pickups. For some reason, I thought that a passive DI was the right choice to patch it into the mixer. We struggled by with terrible tone for a few months (I'm embarrassed to say) before trying him with my ART Active DI. The earth moved so we bought one for the Synagogue. I like these because they are well-priced, robust, run off phantom power and have the features I need including up to 40 db cut and XLR input. An XLR input is useful in those situations where somebody has an amp with an XLR out that you want to connect to the mixer without the risk of sending 48V up the amp's bum (as Pete at Smithy's would have it).
