Overview of "The Closer," in general, all three seasons, 2005, 2006 & the current one 2007: In the "Priority Homicide Division" of the LAPD, Deputy Police Chief, Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick--real wife of Kevin Bacon), takes command of the unit in a style unique to her genteel & hospitable Southern US roots complete with a unit-targeted Southern accent. Her immediate supervisor, Asst. Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons), was her lover before she moved to LA to accept her promotion to Deputy Chief. She embodies the toughest case "closer" on modern TV using a keen combination of abilities to sweet-talk & physically allure while intellectually & instinctively clocking murderers. Nobody playing a homicide detective on TV today is more entertaining to observe while she's conniving confessions out of murder suspects. Her diversified unit--Sgt. David Gabriel (Corey Reynolds); Det. Lt. Provenza (G.W. Bailey); by Season 2, Det. Andy Flynn (Anthony John Denison); Det. Mike Tao (Michael Paul Chan); Det. Sanchez (Raymond Cruz) & the only other unit woman, Det. Daniels (Gina Ravera)--most often work solidly together, with occasional intra-unit scuffles, to solve Los Angeles, California's toughest & most sensitive cases. Off & on duty, Chief Johnson's in love with FBI Agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney). During Season 2, it's not uncommon for the Deputy Chief & FBI Agent lovers to 'secretly' collaborate by sharing inter-agency classified information. The personal particulars provide for a great deal of comic relief from situations of high tension, human suffering, death & grief. Sedgwick not only masterfully commands her unit, she delivers commanding lead role performances in every episode. Exec. Producer, James Duff scripted all 29 episodes, with other writers chiming in here & there. Season 2 starts off with the issue of Brenda deciding if she & Fritz will cohabitate. . . . Season 2 Episodes: June 12th, 2006 thru Episode 15: December 4th, 2006 June 12th-1) "Blue Blood"- Chief Johnson investigates the murder of an off-duty LAPD cop while Agent Howard pressures her for an answer about making a lover's commitment to live together. June 19th-2) "Mom Duty" - Chief Johnson has to deploy her genteel prowess to question jurors, when one juror dies in the midst of sitting for a mob-boss trial. When Brenda's momma, Willie Rae Johnson (Frances Sternhagen), makes an unexpected visit to LA, Brenda & Fritz are un der scrutiny. June 26th-3) "Slippin'" - When 2 University of Southern California students are murdered & 1 is injured, Chief Johnson is caught between 3 roles: playing the dutiful hostess to momma, reassuring lover to a Fritz-on-hold & nailing the case closed. July 3rd-4) "Aftertaste" - The elite homicide unit's investigation of a popular restaurant owner's murder is nearly confounded by Deputy Johnson's unusual behavior; Fritz receives a disturbing phone call. July 10th-5) "To Protect & Serve" - The homicide unit is seriously threatened after detectives Flynn & Provenza place baseball box tickets over their official duties. July 17th-6) "Out of Focus" - After Fritz gets a bunch of disturbing phone calls from a stalker, Chief Johnson investigates what appears to be the "stalkerazzo's" suicide. July 24th-7) "Head Over Heels" - Brenda's emotions could be related to the case of a porn star's murder & dismemberment, when she's in charge of the homicide investigation. That's all my space folks, with episodes 8-15 left dangling~Read full review
My wife and I love this series. We started with Major Crimes and then found out, through a friend, of this prequel which led to Major Crimes. It has a great team of detectives, who are quirky with "every man for himself" attitudes. Then along comes Deputy Chief Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick). This feisty, southern blond, pulls them together to work as a team, while amazing them with her awesome interrogation skills and having their backs when it really counts. These detectives gain a great deal of respect for her, and you will notice as the series continues, they show many different ways of looking after her in gentlemanly, protective ways.
The DVD showed up in great condition and was a great value. This is one of my favorite shows.

I actually bought this for my Mother, who is a huge fan of the series. Interestingly however, I had to have some surgery and was stuck in front of the tv for awhile. So I watched several episodes of The Closer and I "got it." I see what it is that makes this series so popular. On the other hand, since I worked in Law enforcement, I find it really hard to believe that a Deputy Chief is going to be interviewing and chasing after suspects. Once you are promoted above the rank of sergeant, you are mainly an adminstrator and NOT an investigator. You delegate that work out to the underlings. That said, "suspension of disbelief" is what I needed here and I used that to enjoy this series.
